Connection

This post is dedicated to all who own iPhones, Blackberrys, Smartphones, Dumbphones….and WHO ARE INCAPABLE of putting their thumbs to rest and these gadgets aside when in the company of someone who is visible – whose presence requires the use of all five senses.  Well, perhaps not always smell, touch and taste but definitely sight and hearing.

The list includes two of my sons.  The third is like his mother – doesn’t feel the necessity to be connected with the entire world (slight exaggeration) at all times.  We happen to enjoy the company of the people we’re with – like to give them our undivided attention and receive theirs.

Enjoy the song – and take note of the chorus.

Love the One You're With – Crosby, Stills & Nash

Lyrics

If you're down and confused
And you don't remember who you're talkin' to
Concentration slips away
Cause your baby is so far away.
Well, there's a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can't be with the one you love
Love the one you're with
Love the one you're with
Don't be angry, don't be sad,
Don't sit cryin' over good things you've had,
There's a girl right next to you
And she's just waiting for something you do.
Well, there's a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can't be with the one you love
Love the one you're with
Love the one you're with
Turn your heartache right into joy
She's a girl, you're a boy,
Get it together make it nice
Ain't gonna need anymore advice.
Well, there's a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can't be with the one you love
Love the one you're with
Love the one you're with

Yes, I've noticed this. It's become like a nervous tick for people who own these devices. Their brains get addicted to a constant flow of trivial data.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this habit most annoying and rude. I'm not sure where it's going as a trend, either. It's still such a new technology, and plays to people's fascination with being in multiple places at once, so I'm afraid it will be an issue for a few more years yet. Hopefully, though, people will become so exhausted trying to keep up all these conversations that they will be happy to be offline for a change and a bit of a rest. Because, really, being available to the world 24/7 is just not sustainable. Is it? I sure hope not . . .

my iPhone keeps me company, yes. but when I'm in the company of others, i keep it away cuz i don't want to be rude no matter how boring a company can be.
i know a person who'd invite me for dinner or tea, and then have a 30-min conversation with her mom or whoever. i'd just walk off. offing annoying.

Ah yes... compulsive smart phone checking... I know the feeling, it's annoying!

GB:
Nor do they recognize how rude it is to those they are actually with.
Perhaps we’ll end up with a new organisation – TA. (Text Addiction).

Trish:
I think you and I belong in a kinder, more gentle world...although we do need our computers for blogging... ;)

Jaya J:
Priorities...this sort of technology seems to have screwed them all up. Although, it is a rather temping way to ignore boring people – but I wouldn’t do it!

Zhu:
Family gathering here Saturday night – perhaps I’ll have everyone check their phones at the front door!

I don't own a smartphone

The captcha was longer than my comment, but less heart-felt.

I am sorry that I'm not going to be able to get together with you this week....it has been mad and totally dedicated to family...who are here in unprecedented numbers.

In the summer?

I remember once during dinner at a restaurant, an entire family had their gadgets out and were completely ignoring each other. I don't know if it's the Asian in me but that is really depressing to watch

Cellphones will always be a touchy subject with me. I never had the use for one until I no longer had access to my daughter. So I bought a cellphone & the judge gave me a tongue lashing over it & wanted to know why I couldn't use my parents phone. How do you argue with a judge? Still, it's the only form of contact (text messages) I've had with my daughter and now that has stopped as well. Couldn't agree more with CSN's lyrics.

oh yeah!

my son takes his i-phone into the BATHROOM with him... while having a shower... to play music!?!

there are also those who watch tv [or something else] at the same time you're trying to talk with them on the phone! GRRRRRRR

long distance on the phone, NOT in the same room...

i gave up calling them, they never noticed!

There ya go. I have a cell that only comes out of my purse if I'm away from home and lost or something. LOL My youngest goes everywhere with his.

His bedroom is 2 rooms away from my office. At 4am I constantly hear birds chirping, the Jetson's theme, etc, as he is being updated and texted frequently. How in the hell can he sleep with that?

What annoys me is when I call him and he doesn't answer. I KNOW that thing is permanently attached to his hand and he's blowing me off. grrrr!

Myra:
How smart/intelligent of you…

Oreneta:
Your week sounds crazy-wonderful!
Summer 2012 – may the stars align…

Punk Chopsticks:
If they do that in a restaurant, they do it at home. So much for quality family time. Very depressing.

JR:
You don’t argue with a judge. (I tried once.)
Can you still text your daughter (even if she doesn’t respond) or is that now prohibited? If it’s not legally prohibited, I’d continue texting.

LW:
Young men do crazy things with their cell phones! ;)
(I won’t elaborate…)

Attila:
Sometimes when my kids text me, I respond with a phone call. (Texting takes me forever.) And, yeah, when they don’t answer, I’m ticked off. What?? A phone call might take two minutes while a text is over and done with in a matter of seconds? I’m their MOTHER! So what if I spout nonsense? I listened to their nonsense when they were little… ;)

Punk Chopsticks said...

Lol Ikr. I blame the parents. I know that sounds harsh (it probably is) but it'd be another thing if it were only the kids using their gadgets. You get the same thing with any vice. I see overweight families all the time and thats even sadder because I'm thinking ' Wow, the kids didn't even stand a chance"

Great song. I don't feel the need to be connected all the time. Perhaps it's because I have no one to connect with. Oi! I feel sorry for me, as should everyone.

Love,
Lola

You’re having a pity party and you didn’t invite me!
You are connected – very much so… :)

AMEN! Thank you, thank you.

And there are the big boys who think they're cool when fielding phone calls during dates. So annoying!

That is one of my pet peeves too. Trying to have a conversation with someone who thinks a text or a call from anyone else should take priority to finishing their own sentence with me. Grrrr. I do the nasty too, but I'm usually alone. Hmmm, I wonder what that says about my character?!

Beth said...

Robyn:
You’re very welcome.
A date? Don’t remember what that is… ;)

The Bodhi Chicklet:
Your last two sentences? I’m not going there… :)

yes i agree for that

I am so guilty of being attached to my iphone and ipad. Even in company! I'm ashamed. I'm trying though....honest!

Beth said...

2Peeeps:
Glad you agree...

Juliette:
You're forgiven because I know you'd never do that with me! ;)
