In the Words Of...

“Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

~Christopher Robin to Winnie The Pooh

I recently had a heart-to-heart with a friend who said to me, “You’re a smart woman - don’t ever forget how strong you can be.”

Being the sort of person who travels through life with an abundance of literary quotations in her head, I replied, “Hey, that reminds of what Christopher Robin told Winnie The Pooh!”

My words were met with a blank stare followed by a look of dismay. I suspect he was re-thinking that “smart woman” remark.

I explained my quantum leap of thought – the similarity of the advice.

He still looked a bit perplexed.

Hey, what man wouldn’t want to aspire to the wisdom and eloquence of Christopher Robin? Or for that matter, the wisdom of Winnie The Pooh? Or any inhabitant of the Hundred Acre Wood (aka 100 Aker Wood)?

I would take such a comparison as a compliment. ;)

P.S. We’re still friends – he just knows me a little better now – is more prepared for those quantum leaps…

I'm always prepared to make any literary leap with a good friend who understands me. Well done.

And I would have said: "But of course!" All of life's little ups and downs can be solved by a dose of Pooh wisdom.

Winnie the Pooh is a very wise bear. Every child who has heard or read those stories is instinctively aware of that.

He was trying to lure you into the sordid world of body-building, wasn't he?

Winne The Pooh is by far my FAVORITE children's book. Simplistic but solid wisdom could be read within.....

Maybe he thought you were accusing him of plagiarism. You should have reassured him that great minds think alike.

It often takes someone younger, or someone with a younger state of mind, to cut to the chase and get right to the essential. It's too bad we can't all harken back to when our lives were simple. *sigh* You know, like thoroughly enjoying dandelion growth! Pooh has some great wisdom in his simplicity.

Pooh is one smart little guy! But grown men don't like being compared to little guys, I suppose.

Being able to remember a quote from Winnie is as good as quoting Freud or Tolstoy or whatever stuff deemed "serious".

Winnie rocks!

there was a saturday night live recurring skit that was called 'daily affirmation with stuart smalley' that contained the phrase "i'm good enough, i'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me." it kind of stuck with me, much like winnie the pooh did for you.
leaps are usually best understood by the one doing the leaping. (others can feel like they are grasping at air when there isn't a clear, understandable reference point).
nobody likes to feel like pooh pooh heads.

What a nice compliment for you! And I have to admit, I've never really been a big Winnie the Pooh fan, but he can be pretty astute sometimes. :)

That Pooh says the sweetest things. I don't see how it was much of a leap from your friend's statement. I also don't get why he was so bewildered. Maybe that's because I, like you, am a woman. He's not. Thank goodness Pooh's in touch with his feminine side.
Cheers, Beth!
