Joy

So…

Say you have a son you adore (or three) who happens to play the piano and one day you hear him playing such a beautiful piece you pause and stop what you’re doing.

And, then, you hear a voice singing along with the music – and you haven’t heard this son of yours sing solo with such gusto and abandonment since he was a child. Momentarily, you wonder where this deep, rich voice is coming from.

If you’re me, you are blown away, amazed and enthralled. And so you sneak into the living room to listen – very, very quietly.

And you don’t ask the meaning of these particular lyrics…

is that alright, yeah?
give my gun away when it's loaded
is that alright, yeah?
if you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it?
is that alright, yeah?
give my gun away when it's loaded
is that alright yeah, with you?

…because you’re not sure you really want to know and the song and the singing are just so damn beautiful…

You simply listen to his voice, watch his hands on the keys and his body swaying to the music - and you marvel.

Sing it loud, sweetheart.

And sing it again.

He did. By request.

9 Crimes – Damien Rice

(This video scared me silly – I had to close my eyes. But I love the song. And if you’re still with me and watch the video, listen for the crescendo. Wow, my kid belted that out…)

Chilling video -- but the song is amazing and the message comes through loud and clear. Why is it though that the people who need to see these videos and hear this music to receive the message aren't listening?!?

Anyway...I think there is nothing more joyous than listening to our children -- sing, play an instrument or watching them do something beautiful -- I am blown away every time I watch my children play hockey. But I think it is even more special when you catch them doing something they are enraptured by and have no idea they are being observed.

My oldest has been singing aloud with his guitar when only the two of us are home. I was totally shocked the first time it happened.

Oh, and I forgot to say I loved the music on the video. I need to make more of an effort to work music into my day.

*goosebumps* haunting video!

I love those moments when something my child does makes me pause. And what I also love is when they themselves marvel at what they can do.

Beautiful song. When I was a kid I was really shy, and I used to sing in the bathroom because I thought no one could hear me. I was in there singing once and heard my mom say, "wow Marie has such an amazing voice! I had no idea!" I was so embarrassed I haven't belted it out like that since.

I can't watch that video. But I definately would watch you son sing this song. As ong as he is not a diembodied head. (shudders)

Wow! I have chills. That song is amazing. The video, well, is loaded!

Your kid playing and singing is awesome. I love how much you adore him (all three of them) and that you allow us to witness such motherly adoration, especially for us who have never known it -- either to give it or to receive it.

You give me hope!

I'm glad that I took the time to listen to this song . . . because I really couldn't imagine how anything beautiful could come out of those lyrics (which I still don't get).

Beautiful piano and strings and vocal, though.

It must be lovely to have a musical child! My teenager is permanently plugged into her Ipod, but as far as I can tell, music is just an internal thing for her.

wow Beth....that song gave me chills. I really really liked it, and will have to listen to it many more times, I'm sure.

You have every right to be such a proud mom. wow......

Turns out that this Damien Rice guy is one of my niece's favorite singers! I learned so much this week!

...it's songs like that one that make me wish I never gave up on piano....

I have never heard of Damien Rice, but WOW, what a powerful song and video. I literally have chills.

It must have been amazing to hear you son belt that out. Hearing our children play an instrument and/or sing very, very special. I'm glad you had the chance to enjoy that special moment.

There IS an amazing joy from listening to your child make music. Thanks for sharing this special moment.

I love the song, but that is one freaky vid. Like Bee, I am still trying to figure out what the lyrics mean. Here's where I'm going to learn more:
