Last Friday our loving, gentle giant of a dog was put to sleep.

(There is no good expression for this deed.)

The boys and I came to this decision in our own individ
ual ways but each of us came to it with our love and respect for Major. And we stayed with him – he was not alone, was still surrounded by that love.

It is so difficult to separate the knowing when it’s time from the loving but one day, finally, you realize that all the accommodations you’ve been making are not just for him but for you - for your desire to keep him with you.

Major brought us such joy and unconditional love for 13 ½ years. And how he made us smile! To let him go with his dignity and amazing spirit intact was the gift we gave him in return.

We knew we would miss him fiercely – we just never could
have anticipated what a tremendous impact his absence would have upon our lives.

What a beautiful tribute to your precious family member!

Our pets make our lives richer and more full of joy, and they give us such wonderful gifts each and every day.

I'm sorry for your family's tremendous loss.

Those photos are wonderful, and your boys are very handsome. (Major too.)

Sending you hugs and love.

So sorry to hear about this, Beth.

Kudos to you and the boys for not being selfish and forcing Major to suffer just so you could have him around a little longer.

Here's hoping the sadness gets replaced by fond memories only, as soon as possible.

((((Beth))) that you used a photography of Major with each of his best boys, just breaks my heart.
I met Major and he was a wonderful, wonderful part of your family.
You will miss him but you have given him a tremendous tribute here and you did what you needed to do out of love for such a beloved member of your world and your family.

Beth, I feel for you and your family. There a lot of memories in 13 and 1/2 years that hopefully will never fade.

Oh Beth. Hugs. That is so tough. xo

Now I'm going to cry. I am glad you were able to make the decision for him while he was dignified and not suffering. The hardest thing about having pets. I don't look forward to that day.

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss! It's a damn shame that our furkids don't live as long as we do so we can all grow old together. :-(

Ah, Beth - you and the boys gave him the greatest gift, and the fact that you were with him until the very end shows your strength and love.
He touched everyone's life, and we will miss him greatly, but he will always, always be loved.
p.s. I love that there's a bottle of beer in each pic of the boys!

Oh, I know that's so hard. We were with some friends yesterday - who have a big black Lab who was hit by a car -- and they are struggling to make the right decision for him. As for themselves, of course they would rather just have him alive.

Sorry, B.

To All:
Many thanks for your kind (and comforting) words.

Beth: You apologized for going O/T over at my place, and I wanted to reassure you that I completely understand, and that there's no need to apologize. I do know what you're going through.

If it works for you the way it has so far worked for me, you'll be swamped by grief for a few days, and maybe even get stabbed by flashes of pain that seem worse than the first day, and then it'll slowly start to fade.

And I do mean slowly -- seemed like I couldn't detect a change in the way I felt, day to day. I kept having moments where, say, a flicker of light in the corner of my eye would make me think Strawbs was trotting up to see me, or I'd come across a toy she had hidden somewhere. It was only after a few weeks had gone by that I could look back and realize, okay, I guess I'm getting over this.

I'm so sorry.
We had to put our Eddie to sleep 2 months ago. (Two months & 6 days ago...) It was an awful, awful, awful & emotional day.

We still miss him every day...and I'm sure you miss Major the same way.

Sorry to hear about your dog. My wife and I had a black lab that had to be put down. Ironically, I was in the middle of reading "Marley & Me" at the time; what a tear jerker. Anyway, sorry for your loss.

Oh Beth! I am so so sorry.

He was a very sweet dog and indeed a part of your family. I am sure you will all miss him very much.

It was not so long ago that we had to have our much loved cat put to sleep (and how right you are - there is no comfortable euphemism) so commiserations.

And thanks for blogging again too.

Beth, I am so sorry to hear about your much loved Major. It is so hard to have to make this decision even though you know that it's the best thing to do. You have lots of memories from the past 13-1/2 years which will I know will bring you smiles in time. Big hug.
