Legalese

I know, I understand that the rhetoric used in correspondence between lawyers is simply posturing. (My lawyer does not engage in such denigration and belittling.)

And perhaps this rhetoric is meant to intimidate and/or upset those involved (i.e. me).

It does – for awhile.

I’m not used to being a part of this kind of world – I’m not used to being subjected to this sort of denigration.

It makes me feel sick.

But if this language and these threats are supposed to wear me down, make me give up, they are not working.

I rebound each and every time.

But today did not start out very well.

Either something wonderful will happen to cheer me up or I bloody well better make something good happen.

Sometimes it's best to leave the lawyers out of it and come to a mutual agreement. It's always painful when cutting losses.

You need a good book and a glass of wine. Two I've read lately:

The Tenderness of Wolves
Five Quarters of the Orange
The Bridge of Sighs

Feel better.

I'm not quite sure what is going on, but if it involves lawyers it has to be tough. I am a legal secretary, and deal with legalese all day, every day. Feel free to e-mail me if you need help. And don't let them bully you - you are right in that it is strictly posturing. They go have to go into court with the attitude of they are going to get what they want (this is what we pay them for), and don't always drop the 'tude when they come out of court.

YOU CAN NOT be beaten down; you WILL NOT give up; you CAN NOT be intimidated and that is why he left.
Not just "something" good will happen - many good things WILL happen. WE will hold your ground. Lawyer BS or not

You are the good thing happening! Your courage. Your tenacity. Your humor. Your love. The fact that you rebound each and every time is the GOOD THING HAPPENING!

Add some chocolate and you got it going on!

Sorry it's so tough. Love to you.

((((YOU))))

Unfortunately, that was never a possibility.
(Welcome back.)

guy:
Lesson learned too late.

oreneta:
Lots of good things did happen today.
(Thank you, pal.)

mrs.g:
I think I've read Five Quarters of the Orange (I have trouble keeping track...) but have noted them all.
And I thank you.

anonymous:
Thank you for your very kind offer and for leaving a comment. I understood everything in the letter except for the word "resile" - and it wasn't even in my dictionary! I had to Google it.
And while I do know it is all posturing, it's still hard to accept.

wings:
Love you - and hearing from you today was a good thing.

la la:
Your words are touching and so encouraging. Thank you.
And now I'm going to have a bit (just a little bit!) of chocolate from my secret stash.
(Hugs back to you.)

I remember the legal jardon. Who uses "whereas" in every day language? Glad to see that good things did happen and will keep on happening. :)

FYI: Two memoirs on RP: One by Jim Knipfel (Slackjaw) and Ryan Knighton (Cockeyed). Read Slackjaw-lots of censored language. I get turned off by a lot of cussing.

Am planning on reading Cockeyed soon.

This sounds very much like what my mother went through with her recent divorce. Her lawyer was quite good in saying, "Don't stress. This is my job and these letters are part of the process". If only lawyers were free.

Stay strong Beth! Chocolate is good too.

Lawyers suck. They mess up everything -- EVERYTHING!

Good luck, kiddo. I'm sure that, right now, great things are preparing to happen to you. Count on it.

Lawyerism, and lawyer-issues in general, can be a real dragger.
Know one of my favorite terms, in lawyerese?
Ever been in a courtroom situation and you hear them talking like, "My friend says" [in reference to the other, opposing type lawyer].... "my friend..." they keep saying, in reference to each other.... it's like two badgers, looking at each other and saying... "This other badger, whom I do not want to eat his leg off right now" [even though he does want very much to eat the other badger's leg off]..... never was there a more incongruent term being used, then when one lawyer calls another lawyer "my friend."!!!
That's my two cents!

Phew. It sometimes seems like some people actually want to jump through more hoops, doesn't it?
Much love & hugs your way... each and every time you get a letter.

I hate that this is happening to you - you don't deserve this!

Oh dear...I do hope that something good happened, or that you made something wonderful happen.

Here's a bit of my own obscure language: Illegitimis non carborundum!

(Don't let the bastards get you down!)

Verbiage is garbiage. Meant to intimidate. After all these years, you'd think "that guy" would know you better!!! But hey, maybe since "that guy" created this change, he didn't know just what change he'd be creating in you!!!

*heavy sigh* Having dealt with lawyers, I now see why Shakespeare said that we should just kill them all (any present lawyer company excluded, I'm sure). ;)

Kudos to you for not letting it get the best of you. I went to bed for months. {{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}
