Choices

Some people believe possessions and material goods make you happy. They even go so far as to think such possessions are a reflection of themselves – that owning “things” will show the world how successful and accomplished they are. And granted, there is an element of truth in that.

But people don’t like you for what you have, they like you for who you are.

I’m the first to admit I enjoy my creature comforts – a nice home, a car and yeah, lots and lots of books.

And I’m not a total flake. I agree with the saying, “Money may not bring you happiness but try living without it.”

I’m fortunate I’ve never had to live near or at the poverty level. (Student poverty doesn’t count.) I’m also fortunate to have learned when I was very young that THINGS do not bring lasting happiness. A temporary one, yes.

If you don’t possess the love and respect of others or the ability to find contentment within yourself, you’re going to have a tough time finding that happiness you seek.

But if that’s the route you’ve chosen, best of luck.

I’d rather have the love.

(Sorry for the rant – there are times when stating the obvious just feels good.)

I think we are both expressing and exposing ourselves today dear Beth!! Speaking the obvious sometimes just makes it resound and echo throughout our souls...
A trip to an exotic locale is lovely...it's more about the memories that are made on that trip, that is what will last, not the "grandiose gesture"...you have learned the lesson that matters and so have your children...they get it in all the ways that matter.

New year coming...new day, each and every one...better than the last or worse than the last...we make each one what it will be with that incredible value of "self".

I agree with what you've said....

...and yet, I'd still like to try & disprove the phrase, "money doesn't bring you happiness." Maybe it doesn't....but I'd sure like to give it a try!!!!

What started this rant, I wonder? Perhaps my post about my clumsy hubby? Whatever the inspiration, it is indeed true, and always worth repeating. And I must keep repeating it to myself, because I KNOW the hubby will break more stuff in the future...

Wishing you a wonderful Happy New Year, full of love and books and lots of good times (and hopefully very few stressful times!)

a good rant is soul cleansing!! And ya, you can't live without money, but in the long run,....on your death bed..will you say,"Damn! I wish I would have worked more and made more money!"

I like to think that I won't. Family and friends are what it's all about...and a couple of crazy dogs!!

Happy New Year Beth!

I couldn't agree more: I'll take the love with a side of kindness.

I wholeheartedly agree! Although, from time to time, I buy something for the instant pleasure of it, I find I get more enjoyment out of getting rid of things and decluttering my life than adding things to it.

It would be fun to give it a go, but I'm thinking....you know exactly what brings you the most happiness - that precious little guy.

patricia:
Actually, I thought that post of yours was a hoot! And you've already figured out "the secret" to happiness.
Happy New Year!

beth:
I'll bet most people would say, "Damn, wish I'd worked less and earned more!"
Happy New Year!

nomad:
I think you're referring to my previous post - and I love every word you say - including the "sweet" bit.

mrs. g:
For you - make that a double side order of kindness AND laughter.
Happy New Year.

psychgrad:
Which reminds me - these Xmas decorations are due to be banished!

It still shocks me how many people don't live by such principles...
