IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

You know Beth, I had never heard of this poem(I know, what rock was I living under). It is so sad and beautiful. The poppies make it even more special...I didn't know the author was also a Candadian physician, who had watched his friend die in WW1, the day before. So powerful!! Do you have the stamp? What do they do in Canada on Rememberance day? In May right? Thank you so much for sharing this with me! My husband had never heard of it either, and he is a pretty big history buff. Pretty sad for us!

Remembrance Day is today - and we observe a two minute silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - the time the Armistice of WW1 was signed.
I think many of ways we observe the day are similar to those you do on Memorial Day.
It is a beautiful poem.

Beth, great minds (patriotic minds!) are thinking alike today. I posted the exact same image!!! I think this poem and the 11th hour, 11th day, 11th month has been ingrained in us since elementary school. As it should be.

This hits home more than you know now that I have a close family member in Iraq.
My father fought in the Korean War. (He loved M*A*S*H). When he was buried, they had a firing squad for veterans out there. What a tear jerker moment that was.
WWI and WWII-Let us not forget any one who fought. I have seen a lot of posts like this. :)
