Just Two of My Big Fears...

My computer is about to blow up. Well, maybe not blow up but eventually fry.

I think it has something to do with the hard drive.

Whatever

There’s a high-pitched whine-wrrrrrr–sound that gets louder and louder and louder until I freak out and shut the whole shebang down. I’ve been told that noise is the fan. This does not reassure me. If the fan is blowing like this something is very wrong – and hot.

This is extremely disconcerting to someone who possesses both a fear of fire and of any electrical thing beyond my comprehension. (Which encompasses just about everything electrical.)

Anyone who checks in with Sitemeter (or its equivalent) might notice I’ve visited their blog in rapid succession lately. This is because one of those “freak me out” moments occurred and I quickly got off.

Repair guy/friend is coming Tuesday to take my Mac buddy away for some R&R.

In the meantime, I’m transferring data to a laptop that’s just about at its bursting point. This has been a brutal process.

Big, important, helpful hint to all — if you have to transfer and/or save a lot of data do it with a Zip drive. This method is so much faster than using one of those little USB flash thing-mees. I discovered this a bit late. The Zip drive is also more reliable. Some of the stuff I transferred to the laptop with the “thing-mee” will not open.

“Word does not recognize this document.”

What do you mean??? I’m in Word and it’s a Word Document!

(Really – what is the point of talking to or yelling at your computer?)

Anyway, Zip drives are the way to go. Take it from me – the complete non-computer geek. (Can you tell?)

Have a wonderful weekend everybody.

And a Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers.

WE ARE AMAZING AND WONDERFUL.

That sucks about the laptop. The same thing happened to me (no fire, just a blank dead screen) and about half of what I had backed up is unreadable. It was mostly writing I had done in university, which was pretty bad anyway. (And I got a new iBook G4 out of it...)

I am also having computer battles...I cannot burn a disc to get photos printed, heck, I cannot even figure out if the danged thing will do it, and it won't talk to the ever loving printer...what is a zip file anyway?

Grrrr. Computers are designed to make us look dumb I think, revenge of the nerd, only some of us, like me, are nerds...and still can't do it.

My deepest sympathies.

It's making the "wrrrr" sound right now! We're gonna blow!
Always, always back up - every day. Not that I do. But I should.

oreneta:
Now that you've asked me what a zip file is I'm wondering if I was wrong calling it a zip drive. And I could never in a million years explain what it is.
When I put a CD or DVD in this computer, it pops right back out.

And you have my sympathies.

Beth, I cannot tell you anything more serious than what I am about to tell you.
--> I was born with three nipples!
OK, admittedly, even though that is true, it's not what I was going to talk about today, the serious thing is this --> YOU NEED TO HAVE A MAC.
Oh, so severely you do!
As do all people that are currently human!
Listen, my old laptop PC used to shut down at any whim whatsoever... just as my novel was being completed... BOOM.
Black screen!
Finally, it just fried itself. I could not even retrieve stuff off my hard-drive.
Then I got my MAC.
There is just no more to say about it.
My life is changed. No more blackouts.
Just thought I'd let you know.
As long as you are running around in a Windows-PC environment, you are going to be over-heated!
And it has nothing to do with our Ontario weather!
My laptop PC blew up in February!

Hey.
Will the Sens win tonight?

I hate to tell you this (and possibly ruin your day, your life) but I do have a Mac. And it's the one doing the heating-up with the "wrrrr" sound.
Having admitted that, I still swear by Macs - the only kind I have ever used!

Please post a picture of your three nipples.

Re: the Sens. While I do hope they win tonight, you cannot possibly imagine how painful it is for me to root for this team.

Wait, maybe you can - imagine rooting for the Leafs!

I absolutely panic when technology starts to act up on me because I get traumatic memories of my first major computer virus... I got rid of it on my own after nearly a month of running various sluggish programs and such. Gah.

And happy mother's day to you!!!
I hope the boys spoil you like you deserve...

princess pointful:

You had the patience to work on a virus for a month???
I've never had a virus on a Mac - (knock on wood...)

Mother's Day Plans - I do believe they are cooking me dinner! And that (to me) is a truly fabulous gift.

Flashing stinks; Zipping doesn't. Get a new fan and your whirring will stop.

Sounds like demons. Your computer needs an exorcism.

jr:
Glad to have my own conclusions confirmed.
Unfortunately, there's more "wrong" with my computer than just the whirring sound. It's going for a repair job. I will miss it.

I knew there was something (hot) in there that shouldn't be! I just hope it doesn't start "spewing" or doing a 360!

Happy Mother's Day Beth!

My computer is about to go too....I've been telling hubs that we need a new one....for about 4 years now....maybe this year?

Have a great day! Are your boys around?

beth:
You should have asked for a new computer for Mother's Day!

The boys are preparing dinner tonight as my "gift." Hurray.

Happy Mother's Day to you, too!

Sounds scary...but yeah, a little computer R&R might be just the thing.

Happy Mothers Day

Ugh. I hate computers. I love them. But I hate them. They drive me nuts. Anyway, here is what you should do:

Step 1: Unplug computer.
Step 2: Drive to nearby high rise.
Step 3: Go to roof of high rise.
Step 4: Drop computer off roof.

Happy Mother's Day!

That advice would take care of the "hate" factor. Then I'd just have to get a new one for the "love" factor.

Thanks for the Mother's Day wishes!

Hope you computer problems get worked out. Yes, that does sound like a fan problem, and it's very important to get it fixed. Also a very good idea to move or back up your data while your computer is getting tweaked. Fool that I am, I did not do this. When my fan from my old computer finally died (along with the whole processor) I lived in absolute terror that I had lost everything. Thankfully the hard drive was not affected, but what a scary lesson to experience.

Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day!

And I'm kinda freaking out about Cip's three nipples...

Ever since I had a laptop stolen (many years ago) which had not been recently backed-up, I've been paranoid about saving and backing up data.

Mother's Day was great!

Check with Cip about his three nipples - he really should post a picture.
