Q&A

Why do I have trouble coming up with a blog post while others post on a daily or at least a regular basis?

Obvious answer. I don’t possess a niche.

“Niche: a place, employment, status, or activity for which a person or thing is best fitted - finally found her niche - : a specialized market”

I am not creative in terms of art or crafts, do not possess photographic talent, am not particularly good at the anecdotal, refuse to bore people with my daily activities (trust me, they are boring) and if on a spiritual or soulful quest, unable or reluctant to articulate the hows and why of said journey. I don’t tackle political events or world issues and when I do get personal, the post often ends up cryptic and/or incomprehensible. At times I may achieve the status of amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny. I don’t stick to the literary nor do I possess the skill or appreciation to write about the world of art. I love music but my eclectic taste puts me beyond the realm of authoritative critic.

Where does this leave me? Confused.

But I did post today. Perhaps my forté is the niche-less post.

“The niche-less post.” Reminds me of that infamous phrase from an Erica Jong novel. Don’t want to risk an R rating, but trust me, it’s memorable – to those of us of a certain age. ;)

The beauty of life is not being pigeon holed into a niche...it's nice to sometimes read blogs that are subject related but I prefer a little of this and sprinkling of that...isn't that what life is really?

Then ask yourself this question - why do people keep coming back to read you and send you loving thoughts? Perhaps niches are overrated?

I agree with The Bodhi Chicklet...niches are not always "all that." I like to read what you write, simply because you write it.

I'm still new to your blog but I admire it because it is both literary & insightful.

Niche-less is OK. I've been to plenty of what I consider trash blogs: they are highly vain and speak only about the minutia of these people's lives, not even in a witty Anne Lamott-ish or introspective Natalie Goldberg type of way. More in a sick snoozing voyeristic way.

I'd go with niche-less any day over trite, cotton candy, Olive Garden blogs.

You are too modest, Beth. And you are fall off the chair laughing funny. You just don't know it. On top of all that, I find your blog beautiful and inspiring because it's real and honest and unassuming. Lovely weekend to you! Keep on blogging!

beth, you are a niche. Everything you do, you can write about if you like. You know I would read it :)

I used to post Mon/Wed/Fri without fail. Now it's a once a month (if I'm lucky) type deal.

Life happens. That's my excuse. :o)

Then there are blogs, that are MASSIVELY successful, but stick so firmly to the niche it is bizarre and ultimately disappointing.

I think you belong to a niche: the witty niche.

You manage to be entertaining and to not bore reader with daily (well, not daily, but you know what I mean) little snippets. And I'm not being sarcastic here. You are a good writer and people can relate to what you live. That's your gift.

Ehn - I think niches are overrated. Real life, interesting life, happens in the minutiae. And sometimes it's just in the refreshing act of reading a well written passage.

This post, about how you are without a niche, humorless and uninteresting, is itself -- humorous, and interesting!
And very creative.
And fun.

I think your blog is perfect, just the way it is. You don't need a niche, you write about real life. Things that pop into your head. It is never dull and always interesting. Your a good writer Beth! I love your posts.
