Wired

Was at the dentist yesterday. I never, ever like going there.

It was noted that I have a wobbly bottom tooth. (Their descriptive word, not mine.) I was not aware of its wobbliness since I don’t pick and push at it with a metal object. And, of course, now I am constantly touching it with my tongue to check for the wobble. This is not a good thing to be doing.

“You need a blah…blah…blah…wire.”

“You mean braces??!!” (All I heard was the word wire and wire = braces in my book)

“Oh, no, not really – just a wire.”

Not really my ass. (Or should I say my tooth?)

“And until you get the work done, don’t bite anything using that bottom tooth.”

Try eating without biting.

I’m now frantically trying to book an appointment with the orthodontist (this word also spells b-r-a-c-e-s to me) to whom I’ve been referred before I go away on holidays. What kind of vacation is it if you can’t bite? I can’t drink wine and coolers the entire time!

Obviously, I’m not too old for braces but I do NOT want a visit from the Tooth Fairy.

Ask about a splint.

reyjr: no wisdom teeth is a sign of evolution ;) i don't have them either and I am 33, so I feel good about going with that...

beth: i share your issues with dentists. i go, but with reservations. pretty convinced that you have to be a bit of a masochist to become one ;)

Get those really cool metal teeth that guy had in the old James Bond movies. It'll be fun at airports too!

I'd never say never to living entirely on wine and booze. Sure, you'd be completely drunk all the time but never say never.

Ahhh. Another of life's little adventures! Sorry, but I have to say it: Looks like you'll just have to grin and bear it. Or is that "bare it?"

I am sorry, but this sounds weird....why a wire?????

I've had this thought many times: Teeth are just not built to last. Dental care is just so ongoing . . .
I guess that an apple a day is not the proper prescription for your wobble?

Hmmm. Isn't that a kicker? Just what did they say is making it wobble? It must be kind of weird looking for an orthodontist...let's just say, "at your age". (!) Who knew adults would need one too? I am stymied, and that is hard to accomplish. 8-}

If you want my European opinion, I think North American dentists are a little bit neurotic: everything has to be fixed, bleached, improved, straightened etc.

But hey, gotta do it... so tell us how it went!

I hate going to the dentist :(

Definitely braces is the word to say... sorry to read that. No matter what I might write to you, this just sucks!

Good luck!

Talk about "starting over" .. braces? I could go the soft food route all summer...and of course drinks are never a problem!! May it be something very simple!!!

In my department, there are two women in their 50's with braces. Better now than then. So wobbling is not good. Who knew?

Oh come on, leave something under the pillow and see what happens!

Maybe you should focus on cake, ice cream and red wine until you can chew again.

drink the wine. you can live on that for weeks. either that, or you can eat soup and pudding.
preferably red wine.

I used to tease the neighbor kid about his braces. Now I have braces. He says, "At least I'll have mine off before I'm fifty." I guess I asked for it. One year down, two more to go.

Yikes, I hate your life for you.

I never wore braces as a child despite the fact that I probably needed them. I did have a retainer, though, which is why my teeth don't look ridiculous today.

Beth,
Didn't you know that braces are very in now, for all ages? Plus you can now get them invisible. They work pretty quickly now too. Much better than a wobbly tooth.
Hope you can get in to see someone soon. It would bother me to no end.
Good luck.

after my braces were taken off, I had a wire on the back of my teeth that was supposed to stay there for life as a 'brace'. A few months after the braces were removed, I bit into an apple and the permanent retainer was gone.

...eat an apple. :o)
