Marching With The Rest Of Them

No celebrities spotted vis-à-vis the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday BUT I did get my picture taken – while walking in a parade.

Somehow, while simply trying to cross the street I ended up marching with a huge crowd for about a block before I could make it to the other side. Others had successfully made it across. I got hemmed in by a line of police officers on bicycles.

I don’t know who organized this march but I was engulfed by people wearing t-shirts with the slogan, “For the Poorest of the Poor.”

Worthy cause (of course) but I don’t understand how these things happen to me. At a time when Toronto is full of limos, celebrities, red carpets, gala events, etc,. I end up in such a parade? Some of my fellow marchers looked pretty grim. I felt awkward for having inadvertently joined them and then guilty for leaving (ASAP) to meet my friend for lunch.

And, dear God, I hope my brief and unexpected participation wasn’t a portent of things to come re: my legal separation/financial hassles.

Despite the photographers snapping pics, I suspect my picture will not end up in People Magazine. If it ends up anywhere, you’ll recognize me as the only one not wearing the t-shirt and anxiously searching for an escape route.

Beth, I love the choice of Mickey Mouse for your parade photo -- excellent!

Dear me..you do get into these things don't you?

But I loved this post on various levels -- that all the pomp and $$$$ for the TIFF and there are real issues with poverty that go unheard; and if you do end up in the local paper under the banner "the poorest of the poor" it might go a long way in your legal battles....

I'm also laughing out loud at you making your escape and wondering what your fellow marchers thought of the "deserter"!!! :)

now that's pretty funny. at least it wasn't some political march for something you completely disagreed with.... if THAT had been the case, then certainly your picture would be on the front page of the newspaper for all the world to see that you agree with... I dunno...the beheading of graffiti artists, or something...crazy!

You're too funny! Even though I've never seen you in person, I can totally see you in that parade trying to get across the damn street!

Thanks for the snapshot of you making your way to lunch!

Could've been a gay pride march. That would've been hard to explain away should your photo had have appeared in a monthly Lesbian magazine. If there is such a magazine!

Would've been really bad had you been wearing a tshirt with "I'm filthy rich" slapped across it!

Ha ha! I'll be searching the net for you!

Fingers crossed, I assume not...at least it wasn't a horror show of a group like taxidermists for a furrier future....

you had the blue tee that said 'eat the poor'?
at least you have a good humor about it. and why not, it was for a good cause.
and presumeably, you made your luncheon on time.

You should have asked somebody if they had any Gray Poupon...

Have you been downtown lately?! Such a happening place. I saw lots of marches. (Did not join them.)

lainey-paney:
It certainly crossed my mind that I was marching with the right kind of crowd.

lynn:
And so typical...

she:
I suspect the look on my face was a mixture of bewilderment and determination (to get out).

amc:
Actually, years ago I was in a gay pride march. Again, inadvertently, but it was fun.

jules:
I never thought of that sort of exposure. I think I'll check.

oreneta:
Yeah, it was a good cause. Had I not had to "do" lunch....

seraphine:
Made it on time, enjoyed it - and didn't spend too much money!

ve:
And caused a mini-riot. No way.

What a day that must have been. I've never been an inadvertant protester. How was lunch?

This made me laugh....a lot. I hope your escape was quick and that you ended up having a great time.

By the way, I'm still checking out People. You never know!

Since I have a valid subscription to "DESTITUTE People" magazine [for which I myself am current Poster-Boy] I look forward to seeing the paparrazzi shots of you in the throes of this teeming crowd of ne'er-do-wells.

You're funny... and it's always fun to be in a parade.

So are some of those limos parked in your driveway? Are they all over the place? Do you trip over them on your way to Tim Horton's for a donut?

Did you smile, er, march for the camera? Just kidding.

Things happen. Maybe the photographer took several pics and won't select that one?

I hope you enjoyed your lunch with your friend.

If Jesus were around today, I'd like to think he's be walking in parades and wearing t-shirts in support of the poor.

Parades scare me a little.
My overactive imagination envisions an instigator stirring things up and the whole mass gets ugly. If I add Disney creatures to the mix it becomes truly frightening.

Glad you made it through.

Aw, Beth, I can picture your confused face when you figured out where you ended up!

Random Charlotte fact # 2273: I love parades! I will do just about anything to get to a parade. And how fun would it be to hold a balloon?! I would have joined you in a heartbeat and waved like my life depended on it.

Ha! I wonder what they thought of you? Maybe someone's cousin or sister?? :)
