Hey Bloggers!

Son #3 here looking for a little help from this great network of people.

For coming up on two years now, I’ve been working as the Vice President of an non-profit organization called OneChild, a passionate youth run organization dedicated to fighting the commercial sexual exploitation of children (child sex tourism, child prostitution etc.). Please check out our web site for further information as to our mission, history and accomplishments to date. (Also on the list of links my mom has, for which I am grateful).

OneChild and its founder, Cheryl Perera was recently awarded a BRICK award, dubbed by CNN as "the Oscars of Youth Service", which recognizes youth under the age of 25 who are agents of positive social change. We are proud to receive a $10 000 community grant from the BRICK awards which is being directed towards the construction of a rehabilitation centre for children affected by the Philippines sex industry. This honour also means that OneChild has a shot at an additional $15,000 awarded to the Golden BRICK recipient chosen by the public through an online voting system which begins on March 1st. In order to vote, the public must log onto www.brickawards.com. It would be an incredible help if you would kindly spread the word among your networks to vote for Cheryl Perera & OneChild.

**You only have to vote in one category for your vote to be officially counted.**

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with me and I’ll be more than happy to answer them for you.

Thanks in advance,

In Peace, Love and Solidarity,

Sam (a.k.a Son #3)

Vote from Mimi - check. Best of luck to Cheryl, and I only wish there was somewhere I could vote for Sam for recognition of his incredible efforts. I am so proud of you, kiddo.

You can spread the word in your networks! We could really use any help we can get!

I have worked with volunteer organizations that focus on families because that was where I thought the most impact could be made. However, what I found was that often these families are headed and run by very dysfunctional adults that have already made their choices and for whom, often the damage has already been done. The children hide behind these guardians not knowing any better and I realized that children are the ones that would benefit the most by helping directly...as you are doing.

The child sex trade is humanity at its worst. And by taking it on and trying to save "one child" you are also possibly starting a chain reaction with that one child in turn reaching out to others from the same background. A "pay it forward" sort of thing. With children the possibilities are endless.

Thank you for doing this.

To All: Sam is in class right now (I believe). I've told him that as the guest blogger, he's in charge of responding to comments.
(But here's a little response from me - thanks!)

Great post, Sam! I voted. Best of luck with the awards.

And what more can I say, Beth? You're one very blessed lady in so many ways...

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for your votes so far, it's greatly appreciated.

Trish: From what i've learned from the organizations i've worked with, focusing on children is one of the best ways of fighting these issues. An education is crucial for these children. Many of the children we met in the Philippines had no idea what "rights" were before they had been rescued from the sex trade. Thanks for your kind words.

Attila, Oreneta, Patricia & Mimi, Thank you for voting. I'll be sure to let you all know how it turns out!

I've voted and will send the website to my "volunteer" network. Can we vote more than once?
Keep up the good work!

They keep track of who's voted by the e-mail address, so if you have multiple e-mail addresses, feel free to vote more than once. If you vote twice with the same e-mail address, they won't count it more than once!

Thanks again everyone!

narnie and dorky dad:

It's now Wednesday morning - Sam must still be sleeping. (I'm getting too old to sleep in anymore.)
So, on behalf of my son, thanks for the kind words and for voting!

Mustafa,

I'm sorry I'm not quite sure what you're saying with your comment, perhaps you could re-post in english? (Or french even?)

I voted... and I am pretty damn inspired by some of the stories I read while I was there.

(And those stories were very inspirational - wonderful group of kids.)
